You’re not alone! I have a 22 month old and a 4 month old. As my oldest approaches 2, I realize how much I love toddlerhood. Every new stage as become my favorite. The kisses, hugs, bring me little treasures. It’s the best. As we go out into the world, my heart shatters every time he stops to observe big kids play and they just ignore him. He is the sweetest soul and all I want to do is protect him from all the hurt and disappointment.

The cuddles are my favorite thing! Ugh right there with you re. them wanting to play with the big kids and the big kids not being into it. That happened to us the other day and it killed me!

Courtney! I just reread this and feel so comforted by the similarities of our stories. I freaking love this age. As someone with a toddler AND a newborn, can confirm toddlerhood is superior. My oldest turned two at the end of December, and I’m constantly trying to stay in the moment rather than catastrophizing it by lamenting that it’ll end. Just today we noticed she looked older and she’s seriously getting even cuter but I also wanted to cry!!! When she calls out for me, my heart melts AND breaks. The longing for what’s present! And gosh, the teen scene is very relatable. Soleil says hi to literally everyone and it makes me furious when she gets ignored. Happens all the time. FURIOUS every time. I love that your friends said that every new age gets better and better. That’s (so far) been my experience, too.

Ugh staying in the moment is so tough. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way! And seriously, what is wrong with people who ignore babies?! I wonder if you can also relate to this - a friend asked on Louis' bday if it felt like time was going by really fast and it's strange because it definitely feels like its been 2 years since I had him. The newborn phase feels like such a long time ago and I'm already starting to forget a lot about what it was like. But, I also look at him and wonder HOW its possible that its been 2 years. Time moves so differently now!

You're definitely not alone! And yes, I totally relate to the time warp experience. It's truly a mind trip. I absolutely forgot so much about the newborn phase but it's funny how it all kinda clicks back when you're in it again (thank gawd).

This was such a timely read for me! My daughter is turning 1 in a few weeks and I share the same sentiment as you. But not always… some days are really hard. Your piece gave me SO much to look forward to.

I'm so glad!!! There really is so much good stuff around the corner. I'm excited for you! It's funny though, the day I published this ended up being one of the hardest days we've had in I don't even remember how long. Just meltdown city. Anyway, wanted to give you some solidarity there. But I stand by what I said that the benefits far outweigh the challenges of this age. Happy early birthday to you and your daughter!!! Getting through the first year is a big feat!
